If you have a little girl, chances are, you've bought a princess costume or two in your lifetime. Most parents just throw up their hands and wait for their girls to outgrow a princess phrase, but a high school in Kentucky doesn't think that's enough; they feel too many of their girls get to high school still playing princess make believe. Mercy Academy, a Catholic girls' high school, hired an ad agency to create posters to encourage girls to stand on their one.
"You're not a princess," reads one poster, "but you can still rule the world." Another says, "Don't wait for a prince. Be able to rescue yourself."
"This message empowers them to move beyond that whole fairy tale idea and to write their own story in life," Mercy Academy principal Amy Elstone told TODAY Moms. The campaign launched last week, with posters on bus shelters and in the school, plus ads on websites. They've also put the message in the school's enrollment video.
So far, Elstone says all the feedback she's gotten has been positive. Some of her students have even teared up when they first saw the posters. And it's really powerful. Even these days, girls aren't being encouraged to forge their own paths. The Mercy Academy girls may already have a head start--Kerry Washington recently said her all-girls' education made her what she is--but taking it further is just as important.
What do you think of the ad campaign?
